About Our Host:
Jenny Breen - Chef, M Ed, MPH
Jenny Breen, has been working at the intersection of human, community and environmental health in the Twin Cities and throughout the country for over 30 years. She creates custom training and learning experiences for individuals, communities, organizations and colleagues focused on personal or professional food, health and sustainability skills, and delivers programming and community engagement based in human and planetary health, wellbeing, equity and justice.
Jenny teaches 3 classes through the Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing at the U of M-two are in partnership with an integrative MD and are for future and current health professionals, and a 3rd is for undergraduate health and wellbeing students, and explore the role of food choices and our complex food system.
Jenny also runs the teaching kitchen inside the Redleaf Center for Family Healing at Hennepin Healthcare, a postpartum mental health center providing various levels of care for new moms and families, and an integrative approach including a focus on movement, and food skills. In addition to Redleaf patients, Jenny delivers content and education for patients throughout the hospital, employees and practitioners. She believes that there is no part of health or healthcare where food isn't relevant.
Jenny is also the chair of the Homegrown Minneapolis Food Policy Council, and part of the leadership team of the Metro Food Justice Network.
Throughout her work, she utilizes cooking and basic nutrition information to address all aspects of human and community health including the social determinants of health-environmental and structural barriers within the system and the system itself that impacts people's abilities to access and implement healthy food and wellbeing behaviors. While culinary ‘medicine’ is foundational to her courses Jenny also integrates skills and resources to approach systemic change through a regenerative approach; and to collectively impact the upstream effects of injustice within the food system and throughout our communities. Jenny’s vision is to move toward equity and growth that translates to a healthier food system, a healthier community and a healthier planet.
